How to Convert a QBO File to Excel

1

Choose Your .qbo File

Any QuickBooks Web Connect download — checking, savings, credit card or brokerage. It is read straight from its tags, in about a second.

2

Review the Rows

Each transaction appears in a table on this page first, so you can see the date range and count before anything is saved.

3

Download the .xlsx

The QBO file to Excel in one workbook, one Transactions sheet, ready for SUM, filters and pivot tables in Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers.

Can You Open a QBO File in Excel?

Not as rows and columns — which is why people go looking for a QBO to Excel converter. Here is what each route they try actually produces.

✕

Double-click the .qbo

Launches QuickBooks if it is installed — or Windows asks which program to use.

✕

Excel: File > Open

Shows the markup: <STMTTRN>, <TRNAMT> and the rest, piled into column A.

✕

Rename it to .xlsx

Excel refuses: “the file format or file extension is not valid.”

✕

Data > Get Data > From File > From XML

Fails on most bank downloads, which use the older OFX layout that never closes its tags.

What Each Column Arrives As in Excel

A workbook is only useful if Excel knows which cells are numbers. This is how the QBO to Excel converter types every column.

Accounttext

Only when the file holds several accounts

Datetext, year-first

2026-10-03 — sorts A-to-Z in date order

Descriptiontext

The payee, or the memo when no payee is given

Amountnumber

Minus for money out; SUM includes every row

Typetext

DEBIT, CREDIT, CHECK, POS, ATM, XFER …

Referencetext

Check number, leading zeros kept

Memotext

Extra detail the bank sent

Transaction IDtext

The bank’s FITID, every digit kept

QBO File vs XLSX Workbook

One is written for QuickBooks to import; the other for you to work in.

QBO

Where a QBO File Comes From

QuickBooks Web Connect download

Your bank builds it from its own records when you pick the QuickBooks download option. Inside is OFX markup — one tagged block per transaction — written for QuickBooks to import, not for a person or a spreadsheet to read.

XLSX

What an XLSX Workbook Holds

Excel Open XML spreadsheet

Cells with types: a number is stored as a number, so formulas, filters and pivot tables work on it. The default file of Excel since 2007, and the one Google Sheets, Numbers and LibreOffice open without a prompt.

Why This QBO to Excel Converter Adds Up

Amounts That Add Up

Banks write amounts like +249.0 or -00000000002571.45. Each is stored as a number cell, so =SUM() counts every row instead of quietly skipping the odd ones.

IDs Kept Exactly

Transaction IDs, check numbers and account numbers are stored as text: 01042 keeps its zero and a 15-digit FITID never turns into 2.02E+14.

Every Account Named

A download covering checking and a card puts both on one sheet with an Account column first — filter it to work on one account.

Brokerage Files Too

A brokerage .qbo comes out with Action, Security, Quantity, Price and Commission columns, the numbers stored as numbers.

Statement Order Kept

Rows arrive in the order your bank listed them. Dates read year-first, so an A-to-Z sort is also a date sort.

No QuickBooks Needed

A free QBO to Excel converter with nothing to install and no Intuit sign-in. The .qbo is read on our server from its own tags, without AI, and costs no credits.

QBO File to XLSX: The Workbook You Get

The Transactions sheet the QBO to Excel converter wrote for a three-transaction checking download, with a total typed underneath.

Check it against the statement. The total of the Amount column is the period’s net movement: your opening balance plus that figure should equal the closing balance your bank shows.

Who Converts QBO Files to Excel

Desktop Stopped Importing

Retired QuickBooks Desktop versions lose Web Connect import. The bank keeps sending .qbo files; a workbook is where they can still be worked on.

Bookkeeping in Excel Instead

Owners who left a subscription they used four times a year keep the books in a spreadsheet, fed by the same bank download.

Spending by Payee

A pivot table on Description and Amount shows where the money went in a quarter — something a bank register never offers.

Several Months in One Sheet

Web Connect downloads often stop at about 90 days. Convert each file and paste the rows together; the Transaction ID column finds any overlap.

Client Work Without QuickBooks

A client sends Web Connect files; the accountant works in Excel. The workbook is the file both sides can open.

Audit and Loan Paperwork

Lenders and auditors ask for transactions they can sort and total. A typed .xlsx answers that faster than a stack of statements.

QuickBooks Downloads From Any Bank

US and Canadian banks and card issuers label it “QuickBooks Web Connect”, “QuickBooks (.qbo)” or simply QuickBooks. Whichever label yours uses, this QBO to Excel converter reads the file the same way.

QBO to Excel Problems and Fixes

Excel opens the workbook in Protected View

Normal for any file from the internet. Click Enable Editing in the yellow bar to sort, filter and add formulas.

I need to filter or group by month

The Date column is year-first text. Select it, choose Data > Text to Columns, click Next twice, pick Date: YMD and Finish — Excel then treats it as dates.

Green triangles in the ID columns

Excel warns about numbers stored as text. Those columns are text deliberately, to keep leading zeros and long IDs intact — click the warning icon and choose Ignore Error rather than Convert to Number.

“No transactions found in QBO file”

The download covered a period with no activity. Pick a wider date range at your bank and download again.

Two downloads overlap

Paste both sheets together and use Data > Remove Duplicates on the Transaction ID column — the bank gives each transaction one ID.

The payee name is cut short

The bank did that: Web Connect limits a payee to 32 characters. The Memo column usually holds the rest.

Need plain rows for another program instead? QBO to CSV writes the same transactions as a CSV file.

QBO to Excel Converter — Questions and Answers

Q

How do I convert a QBO file to Excel?

Drop the .qbo into the box at the top, look over the rows that appear, then press Download Excel. The .xlsx lands in your downloads folder — QuickBooks plays no part in it.

Q

Can you open a QBO file in Excel directly?

Not as a table. Excel has no reader for the Web Connect format: File > Open shows tagged text in one column, and renaming the file to .xlsx makes Excel refuse it as an invalid format.

Q

Will SUM add up the Amount column?

Yes. Every amount is written as a number cell, including the ones banks write with a plus sign or padding zeros, which other converters often leave as text that SUM silently skips.

Q

Are the dates real Excel dates?

They are written as text in year-month-day order (2026-10-03), so sorting A to Z puts them in date order. To filter by month, convert the column with Data > Text to Columns and choose YMD.

Q

Why do some cells show a green triangle?

Excel flags numbers stored as text. Transaction IDs, check numbers and account numbers are text on purpose, so leading zeros and long IDs survive. Click the warning icon and choose Ignore Error — not Convert to Number, which would drop those zeros.

Q

Can I convert QBO to Google Sheets?

Yes. Download the .xlsx, then in Google Sheets choose File > Import and pick that file. The amounts arrive as numbers there too.

Q

Do I get XLS or XLSX?

XLSX, the format every Excel since 2007, Google Sheets, Numbers and LibreOffice open. Older .xls is not offered; nothing current needs it.

Q

What if my file holds several accounts?

All of them go on one sheet, and the first column, Account, names the account each row belongs to. Filter that column to look at one at a time.

Q

How do I open a QBO file in Excel on a Mac?

Convert it here in Safari or Chrome, then open the .xlsx in Excel for Mac or Numbers. Double-clicking the .qbo itself would try to launch QuickBooks instead.

Q

Is this QBO to Excel converter free?

Yes — a QBO to Excel converter online and free, with no account and no row limit, and it uses none of your daily credits. A .qbo is parsed from its own tags, so there is no AI cost behind it.

Q

Where do I download the .qbo from my bank?

In online banking, open the account’s transaction history and look for Download or Export; choose the QuickBooks or Web Connect (.qbo) option and a date range. Many banks offer roughly the last 90 days per download.

Q

Can I convert QFX or OFX to Excel here?

This page takes .qbo files only. OFX to Excel reads an .ofx download into the same kind of workbook.

Q

Who can see the bank file I upload?

The file is sent over HTTPS to our server and parsed there by deterministic code; your transactions are never handed to an AI model.
