QBO to CSV Converter — Open in Excel
Your bank gave you a .qbo and Excel shows a wall of tags. This free QBO to CSV converter turns that QuickBooks Web Connect file into rows and columns you can sort, filter and send — online, with no QuickBooks needed.
A QBO to CSV converter online, free for bookkeepers, accountants and anyone holding a Web Connect file their software will not take. Open a QBO file on Windows or Mac — no signup.
Convert QBO File to CSV in Three Steps
Drop In the .qbo File
Straight from your bank’s “QuickBooks” or “Web Connect” download, or one sitting in an old folder. Nothing to rename first.
Check Every Row on Screen
The table doubles as a QBO file viewer — dates, payees and amounts appear before anything is downloaded.
Download the CSV
Save one CSV — the quickest route from QBO file to Excel or Google Sheets. A file holding several accounts gains an Account column.
What Does a QBO File Look Like Inside?
Open one in Notepad or TextEdit and this is what you find. Excel sees the same thing.
OFXHEADER:100 DATA:OFXSGML ... <BANKACCTFROM> <BANKID>121000248 <ACCTID>000123456789 <ACCTTYPE>CHECKING </BANKACCTFROM>
<STMTTRN> <TRNTYPE>DEBIT <DTPOSTED>20261003120000[-5:EST] <TRNAMT>-42.10 <FITID>2026100301 <NAME>AT&T WIRELESS <MEMO>AUTOPAY
Tags, not columns. Each transaction is a block of labelled lines, often with no closing tags at all. Renaming the file to .csv leaves every tag stuck in column A. To convert a QBO file to CSV, the data has to be read, not relabelled — which is the whole job of a QBO to CSV converter.
| What you can do with it | .qbo | .csv |
|---|---|---|
| Opens in Excel, Sheets, Numbers | No | Yes |
| Sort, filter and total | No | Yes |
| Edit or delete a row by hand | Risky | Yes |
| Closing balance and routing number | Included | Rows only |
Why QuickBooks Can't Use the File Your Bank Gave You
Nobody downloads a .qbo planning to open it in a spreadsheet. These are the four ways people end up searching for a QBO to CSV converter.
Your Desktop version is past its cut-off
“Online Banking & other services … were discontinued … You can no longer download transactions from your financial institution.”
Intuit switches online banking off for each Desktop release about three years after launch — 2023 went dark on 31 May 2026, 2024 follows on 30 September 2027. Web Connect import goes with it, though the program still opens.
QuickBooks for Mac wants a sign-in
“I don’t want to give quickbooks my username & password (thus the desktop version).”
Mac users report Web Connect setup now pushing them toward a bank login. Converting sidesteps the login question — the rows are yours, with no connection to configure.
The download only reaches back so far
“You cannot get more than 90 days in a QBO.”
Many banks cap Web Connect at roughly 90 days, so history arrives as a pile of separate files. Converted, they stack into one sheet you can sort by date.
It is not a QuickBooks Online file
“QBO” means two things, and only one of them is a file.
Searching “QBO to CSV” often lands on QuickBooks Online export guides. Those move a company’s data out of a subscription. A .qbo download is a bank statement — a different job entirely.
QBO vs CSV: Same Transactions, Different Readers
Both files hold the same statement. Only one of them opens outside accounting software.
What Is a QBO File?
QuickBooks Web Connect
A bank or card download built for QuickBooks to import. Under the extension it is OFX — tagged text holding each transaction’s date, amount, payee, memo and a unique bank ID. Spreadsheets have no reader for it.
What Is a CSV File?
Comma-Separated Values
One line per transaction, fields split by commas, a header row on top. Every spreadsheet, database and accounting import screen reads it — which is exactly what a .qbo cannot offer.
More Than a QBO File Reader
Seven Named Columns
Date, Description, Amount, Type, Reference, Memo and Transaction ID — the same seven every time, so a saved spreadsheet formula keeps working next month.
Every Account Labelled
A “download all accounts” file is split statement by statement. Each row carries its own account in a leading column, and card rows stay card rows.
Check Numbers Kept Apart
The printed check number goes to Reference; the bank’s internal FITID goes to Transaction ID. Many converters merge the two or drop one.
Dates Spreadsheets Understand
The file stores 20261003120000[-5:EST]. You get 2026-10-03 — a format Excel and Google Sheets read the same way in every country.
Signs Exactly as the Bank Wrote
Money out is negative, money in positive, on checking and card files alike. Nothing is flipped, rounded or guessed.
Instant and Uncapped
A .qbo is read from its own tags, not by AI — so this QBO to CSV converter runs online in about a second, uses no credits and has no transaction limit.
Sample Output: QBO File to CSV
The transaction block above becomes the first row here — exactly what the QBO to CSV converter writes. Same file, three transactions.
Swipe the table for all 7 columns →
| Date | Description | Amount | Type | Reference | Memo | Transaction ID |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026-10-03 | AT&T WIRELESS | -42.10 | DEBIT | AUTOPAY | 2026100301 | |
| 2026-10-05 | CHECK 1042 | -250.00 | CHECK | 01042 | 2026100502 | |
| 2026-10-10 | PAYROLL ACME | 1500.00 | CREDIT | 2026101003 |
Keeping 01042 as 01042 in Excel
Double-clicking lets Excel turn check numbers and long IDs into numbers. Use Data > From Text/CSV, choose Transform Data, and set Reference and Transaction ID to Text.
Google Sheets
File > Import > Upload, then untick “Convert text to numbers, dates, and formulas” to keep every ID exactly as the bank wrote it.
Which QBO Tag Becomes Which CSV Column
A .qbo describes two things: each transaction, and the statement around them. Only the first fits a row.
Becomes a column
Time and timezone trimmed off; YYYY-MM-DD
The payee; MEMO stands in when a bank leaves NAME empty
Minus for money out, as the bank signed it
DEBIT, CREDIT, CHECK, POS, ATM, XFER and the rest
Printed check number, or REFNUM when that is all there is
Extra detail the bank attached to the payee
Unique per transaction — your duplicate detector
Describes the statement, not a row
ACCTID
Becomes the Account column only when the file holds several accounts
LEDGERBAL
The closing balance — note it down if you reconcile to it
BANKID
The routing number of the account, not of each transaction
CURDEF
One currency for the whole file, so it is not repeated per row
Why People Convert QBO Files to CSV and Excel
Desktop Online Banking Switched Off
QuickBooks Desktop 2023 lost its services on 31 May 2026. The bank still hands you a .qbo; QuickBooks will no longer take it.
Leaving QuickBooks Altogether
Moving the books to Excel, a spreadsheet template or another program — years of saved Web Connect files need to become rows.
Reviewing Before You Import
See what the bank actually sent — date range, duplicates, odd payees — before it lands in a company file you cannot easily undo.
Handing Records to a Tax Preparer
An accountant without QuickBooks cannot open a .qbo. Everyone can open a CSV.
The Bank Only Offers a QuickBooks Download
Some accounts list “QuickBooks Web Connect” as the only file download. You still get the transactions — just not in a shape Excel accepts.
Month-End Reconciliation
Tick each line against the bank statement, then total the Amount column to check the period’s net movement before you close the month.
Works With Any Bank's QuickBooks Download
Web Connect is mainly offered by US and Canadian banks and card issuers. Look for a download option labelled QuickBooks, Web Connect or .qbo — any of them goes straight into this QBO to CSV converter.
Bank of America files
Bank of America ended Web Connect on 30 September 2025. Files you saved before then still convert here; for newer activity, its CSV export is the route.
Only a PDF statement?
Some banks offer statements as PDF alone. PDF to CSV reads those into the same kind of spreadsheet.
QBO to CSV Problems and How to Fix Them
Check numbers lost their leading zeros
Excel did that while opening the CSV, not the conversion. 2.03E+11 in the Transaction ID column is the same issue. Import through Data > From Text/CSV and set those columns to Text.
Accented payee names look garbled
Excel on Windows can guess the wrong character set when you double-click a CSV. Import via Data > From Text/CSV and pick 65001: Unicode (UTF-8) as the file origin.
Descriptions stop mid-word
Your bank did that, not the conversion — the OFX standard behind .qbo limits the payee name to 32 characters, so “SAMPLE OFFICE SUPPLY #4471 EXAMPLETOWN” arrives as “…#4471 EXAMP”. Many banks put the full text in the Memo column — check there.
“No transactions found in QBO file”
The .qbo parsed but held no transactions — usually a date range with no activity. Download again from your bank with a wider range.
The file will not convert at all
Open it in a text editor. A real .qbo starts with OFXHEADER or <?xml and contains <STMTTRN> blocks. A PDF or spreadsheet renamed to .qbo will not, and needs its own converter.
The same transactions appear twice
Two downloads with overlapping dates. Sort by Transaction ID — the bank’s FITID is unique per transaction, so identical IDs are true duplicates, while identical amounts on the same day may not be.
The upload button will not take my .qfx or .ofx
This page accepts .qbo only, so it never claims to convert QBO to CSV while doing something else. An .ofx has its own page: OFX to CSV.
Double-clicking the .qbo opens QuickBooks
Windows and macOS assign .qbo to QuickBooks once it is installed. Upload the file here instead of opening it, and download the CSV.
QBO to CSV Converter FAQ — Open, View and Convert QBO Files
How do I convert a QBO file to CSV?
Upload the .qbo to the QBO to CSV converter at the top of this page, check the rows in the table, and press Download CSV. It takes about a second, and you never need QuickBooks installed.
Can I convert a QBO file to Excel online?
Yes — download the CSV and open it in Excel; every column lands in its own cell. To keep check numbers and long transaction IDs exactly as written, import it with Data > From Text/CSV rather than double-clicking.
Can you open a QBO file in Excel?
Not usefully. Excel has no reader for it, so you get raw tags such as <STMTTRN> and <TRNAMT> stacked in column A, and Excel’s XML import rejects the older SGML layout, which never closes its tags. Convert the .qbo to CSV first; Excel opens that directly.
How do I open a QBO file without QuickBooks?
Upload it above. The transactions appear as a table in your browser, and the CSV download opens in any spreadsheet program. No QuickBooks licence, Intuit login or desktop install is involved.
How do I open a QBO file on a Mac?
The same way — this runs in Safari or Chrome on macOS. The CSV then opens in Numbers or Excel for Mac. Double-clicking the .qbo itself hands it to QuickBooks if it is installed, which is rarely what you wanted.
Is a QBO file the same as QuickBooks Online?
No, and the shared name causes endless confusion. A .qbo file is a bank download in Web Connect format. “QBO” is also shorthand for QuickBooks Online, the subscription. This page converts the file; it cannot read or export a QuickBooks Online company.
What is the best QBO to CSV converter?
The one that loses nothing your file holds. Check three things: does it keep each account apart in a multi-account download, does it separate the check number from the bank’s transaction ID, and does it show the rows before you download? This one does all three, free.
My file holds checking and a credit card. What happens?
Both come out in the same CSV, with an Account column first so each row says which account it belongs to. Each statement is read on its own, so a card row never picks up the checking account’s number.
What does not make it into the CSV?
The closing balance, the routing number and — in a single-account file — the account number, because a CSV row is one transaction and those describe the whole statement. Every transaction field — date, payee, amount, type, check number, memo and transaction ID — comes through.
Can the CSV go back into QuickBooks Online?
Yes, through Upload from file, where you map Date, Description and Amount. But QuickBooks Online also accepts the original .qbo directly, so convert only when you need to edit or review the rows first.
Is this QBO to CSV converter free?
Yes — a free QBO to CSV converter online, with no login and no row limit, and converting a .qbo never touches your daily credits. Old downloads work too: the file does not expire. Paid alternatives include SoftOrbits (a Windows program whose trial stops at 20 transactions) and StatementVision, which previews free but charges $9 to download the CSV.
Is it safe to upload a bank file to a converter?
The file travels over an encrypted TLS connection and is parsed by plain code — no AI model reads your transactions. A .qbo carries no bank password, only the statement your bank exported.
