Excel

What is Excel?

Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet (XLSX/XLS)

Rows and columns of transaction data. Most finance software can't import Excel directly — it needs a structured format like OFX.

OFX

What is OFX?

Open Financial Exchange

Open standard for financial data. STMTTRN blocks with typed fields and FITIDs. Accepted by Quicken, GnuCash, Moneydance, Xero, Sage, and more.

Why This Tool

Auto Column Detection

Date, amount, and description columns detected automatically — no manual mapping.

Debit/Credit Support

Single amount column or separate debit/credit columns both handled correctly.

FITID Generation

Unique transaction IDs for deduplication. Import the same file twice without creating duplicates.

Universal Compatibility

OFX works with Quicken, GnuCash, Moneydance, Xero, Sage, YNAB, and dozens more.

XLS + XLSX

Both modern (.xlsx) and legacy (.xls) Excel formats supported.

Transaction Types

Debits, credits, and checks mapped to correct OFX TRNTYPE values.

When to Use This

Quicken Import

Bank doesn't offer direct download? Convert your Excel statement to OFX and import into Quicken.

GnuCash / Moneydance

These open-source tools accept OFX natively. Convert Excel data and import via File > Import.

Xero & Sage

Moving spreadsheet data into cloud accounting? OFX imports into Xero and Sage bank feeds.

Excel-to-OFX Issues & Fixes

Quicken won't open the .ofx file

Quicken expects .qfx extension. Rename the file from .ofx to .qfx — the format is identical, only the extension differs.

Dates swapped — month and day reversed

Ambiguous dates like 03/04/2026 may parse as MM/DD or DD/MM. Verify your spreadsheet's date format matches the output.

Amounts missing or zero after import

Remove currency symbols ($) and commas from your Amount column. OFX needs plain numbers like 1250.00.

GnuCash shows "no matching account" on import

GnuCash asks you to map the OFX account to an existing account in your chart of accounts. Select the correct bank/credit card account from the dropdown.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

Which software accepts OFX files?

Quicken, GnuCash, Moneydance, Xero, Sage, YNAB, AceMoney, and most personal finance tools. OFX is the most widely supported financial data format.

Q

Should I use OFX or QBO?

Use QBO for QuickBooks (Desktop or Online). Use OFX for everything else — Quicken, GnuCash, Moneydance, Xero, Sage. OFX is the open standard; QBO is Intuit's proprietary variant.

Q

Do I need specific column names?

No. Date, amount, and description columns are auto-detected regardless of header naming.

Q

Does it handle separate Debit and Credit columns?

Yes. Separate columns are detected and combined into correctly signed OFX amounts.

Q

What about .xls files?

Both .xlsx and .xls formats supported. Same OFX output either way.

Q

Will Quicken accept this OFX file?

Quicken imports QFX (Intuit's branded OFX). Our OFX output is compatible — rename to .qfx if Quicken requires the extension.

Q

ProperConvert and csv2ofx charge $40+. Is this free?

Yes. No transaction limits, no trial caps, no desktop install. Fully free in your browser.

Q

Is my data secure?

Encrypted via TLS, processed in memory, never stored. Your file is deleted immediately after conversion.
