How Quicken Gets Your Bank Data

Quicken has multiple ways to download transactions. When the automatic methods fail, QFX file import is the fallback.

Direct Connect

Automatic

Quicken talks to your bank directly. Requires bank partnership with Intuit. Many banks have dropped this.

Express Web Connect

Semi-automatic

Uses Plaid or aggregator services. Requires bank sign-in via browser. Not available for all banks.

Web Connect (QFX)

Manual — always works

Download a QFX file and import it yourself. Works with every bank, every Quicken version. This is what our tool creates.

PDF

What is PDF?

Portable Document Format

When your bank drops Quicken Direct Connect or you need to import old statements, all you have is a PDF. Quicken can't read it — you need a QFX file.

QFX

What is QFX?

Quicken Financial Exchange (Web Connect)

Intuit's proprietary extension of OFX, built specifically for Quicken. Includes financial institution headers (INTU.BID) and unique transaction IDs (FITIDs) for automatic duplicate prevention. Quicken's preferred import format.

Why This Tool

Built-In Duplicate Prevention

Every transaction gets a unique FITID. Quicken checks these IDs and skips anything already imported — no manual duplicate hunting.

Proper INTU.BID Headers

Includes the Intuit financial institution identifiers that Quicken requires. No "unable to verify financial institution" errors.

Quicken Mac & Windows

Works on both platforms. Double-click the QFX file and Quicken opens it automatically via Web Connect.

Easiest Quicken Import

QFX is Quicken's native Web Connect format — fewer steps, fewer errors, and cleaner imports than QIF or manual CSV entry

Any Bank Statement

AI reads Chase, BofA, Wells Fargo, Citi, HSBC, or any bank's layout. No templates or manual column mapping.

Scanned & Digital PDFs

Built-in OCR for scanned statements and photos. Digital PDFs process in seconds.

When to Use This

Bank Dropped Direct Connect

Your bank discontinued Quicken Direct Connect or Express Web Connect — download PDF statements and convert them here instead

Historical Statement Import

Importing 6-12 months of old bank statements into Quicken for catch-up bookkeeping or year-end tax prep

Non-Partner Banks

Your bank isn't a Quicken partner and doesn't offer QFX downloads. Convert their PDF statements into QFX yourself.

QFX or QIF — Which One for Quicken?

Choose QFX When:

  • You import the same bank regularly
  • Duplicate prevention matters
  • You want the simplest import
  • Quicken handles your categorization

Choose QIF When:

  • You need categories and tags imported
  • You have split transactions
  • You're using GnuCash or MYOB
  • Use PDF to QIF tool

Common QFX Import Issues

"Unable to verify financial institution" error

Quicken checks the INTU.BID header against its internal directory of partner banks. If the ID is missing or unrecognized, import fails. Our QFX files include standard Web Connect headers that Quicken accepts. If you still see this error, try importing into a new temporary account.

Bank of America / Chase dropped QFX Web Connect downloads

BofA discontinued QFX downloads in September 2025, migrating users to Express Web Connect+. Chase and AmEx are heading the same way. Convert your PDF statement here — the QFX file works identically in Quicken.

Quicken shows "Imported 0 transactions" — silent failure

This is the most frustrating QFX issue — Quicken processes the file but imports nothing, with no error. Usually caused by previously-imported FITIDs (Quicken skips duplicates) or the bank not being a recognized Quicken partner. Fix: import into a brand new temporary account, then move the transactions to your real account.

Quicken Mac shows memo as read-only "FI Notes"

Known Quicken Mac behavior — QFX memo fields import as read-only FI Notes, not editable memos like on Windows. Amounts and dates are identical. If you need editable memos, consider QIF format.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

Why does Quicken prefer QFX over OFX?

QFX includes Intuit-specific headers (INTU.BID, ORG, FID) that tell Quicken which financial institution the data belongs to. Standard OFX files lack these, causing "unable to verify financial institution" errors. Our QFX files include the correct headers.

Q

Will QFX prevent duplicate transactions?

Yes. Each transaction in a QFX file has a unique FITID (Financial Institution Transaction ID). Quicken checks these IDs and skips transactions it has already imported. This is a key advantage over QIF, which has no duplicate protection.

Q

I need categories and tags — should I use QFX?

No. QFX does not carry categories, tags, or split transaction details. If you need those, use our PDF-to-QIF tool instead. QFX is for clean, fast imports where Quicken handles categorization via its rules.

Q

Does it work on Quicken for Mac?

Yes, but note a difference: Quicken Mac imports the memo field as read-only "FI Notes" rather than an editable memo field like Windows. Transactions and amounts import identically on both platforms.

Q

Bank of America discontinued QFX downloads — what now?

BofA dropped Web Connect (QFX) support in September 2025, pushing users to Express Web Connect+. Chase and AmEx are moving the same direction. Download your PDF statement from BofA's site and convert it here — the QFX file works the same way in Quicken.

Q

Other converters like MoneyThumb cost $25-100/month. Is this free?

Yes. MoneyThumb charges $5 per conversion ($25-100/month for plans). ProperSoft is $20/month. We offer free conversions with no signup — paid plans start at $15/month only if you need high volume.

Q

Quicken says it doesn't support third-party QFX files — will this work?

Quicken's official stance is they don't support third-party QFX files. In practice, properly formatted QFX files with valid INTU.BID headers import without issues. Thousands of users import third-party QFX files daily.

Q

Does it handle scanned PDFs?

Yes — built-in OCR processes scanned statements and photos without external software.

Q

Is my data secure?

Encrypted in transit, processed in memory, never stored. No copies of your bank data are kept.
