Will Your Version of Quicken Accept a QIF File?

Getting a QIF Into a Blocked Account
On Quicken 2005 through 2017 the destination dropdown will not offer your checking account. Naming the account inside the file gets around it — Quicken honours the header and ignores the dropdown.

The account name after N must match the one in Quicken exactly, spaces and capitals included — a name that does not match creates a brand-new account instead of filling the existing one. Use TBank for chequing and savings, TCCard for a credit card. Take a Quicken backup first; an import cannot be undone.
The alternative, if you would rather not edit the file: create a temporary cash, asset or liability account — Intuit never blocked those — import the QIF there, select all the transactions, move them to the real account, then delete the temporary one.
What is OFX?

What your bank hands out today. Tagged data holding dates, payees, memos, check numbers, a FITID per transaction and a closing balance. Two dialects exist: 1.x is SGML with no closing tags, 2.x is proper XML. Software written before roughly 2003 cannot read either.
What is QIF?
Quicken Interchange Format
Quicken's original format from the DOS era — one tagged line per field, one caret per record, no schema. It has outlived every format meant to replace it because almost every finance program on earth still reads it. What it has no room for is transaction IDs, currency codes and balances.

What This OFX to QIF Converter Gets Right
Account Header From Your File
A checking or savings OFX becomes !Type:Bank; a credit-card OFX becomes !Type:CCard. The account type is read out of the OFX container your bank used, not guessed and not asked — so the file lands in the right register.
Check Numbers Kept
The CHECKNUM field on an OFX transaction becomes QIF's N line, so a cheque you wrote arrives in Quicken with its number attached and reconciles against the statement instead of sitting there as an anonymous debit.
Four-Digit Years, and Your Date Order
Old QIF writers used a two-digit year, which is the reason a 2026 transaction can import as 1926 and vanish to the top of a register. Every date here carries the full year — and because an OFX states dates as 20260703, which cannot say which order you need, there is a switch for MM/DD/YYYY or DD/MM/YYYY above the download.
Both OFX Dialects
OFX 1.x SGML and OFX 2.x XML are parsed by the same reader. Files from banks that never closed a tag in their lives are handled exactly like the strict XML ones.
No AI, No Quota, No Wait
OFX is a specified format, so the file is read from its own tags rather than sent to a model. That makes the conversion instant, deterministic and free of the daily page limits that apply to PDF and CSV conversions here.
Almost Nothing to Configure
No currency picker, no bank picker, no account-type dropdown — an OFX states all three, and asking you to re-enter what the file already says is how a good file becomes a wrong one. The one thing it cannot state is your date order, so that is the only choice offered.
Who Needs an OFX to QIF Converter
Quicken 2004 and Earlier
Still on Quicken 2003, 2004 or Quicken for Mac 2007 because it does the job and the data file is decades deep. Those versions read QIF into any account — they just cannot read what your bank exports now.
After Your Bank Dropped QFX
Bank of America ended OFX and QFX downloads on 30 September 2025. When a bank leaves you with a format your software predates, this is the bridge back.

Which Banks Still Hand Out OFX
OFX is a standard, not a per-bank dialect, so any bank that still offers an OFX, QFX or Web Connect download works here. What has changed is who still offers one.
Already withdrawn
Bank of America ended OFX and QFX downloads on 30 September 2025 and offers CSV only. Chase removed Direct Connect in October 2022. US Bank and Discover have been narrowing their options too.

OFX-to-QIF Import Issues
Quicken will not offer my checking account in the import dropdown
You are on Quicken 2005 or later, where QIF import into bank accounts was switched off. Add the !Account header shown above, or import into a temporary cash account and move the transactions across.
Dates imported as the wrong month, or everything landed in 1926
QIF has no date standard, so the reader guesses. This converter writes four-digit years, and defaults to the MM/DD/YYYY order Quicken US and Canada read correctly. If your software expects DD/MM/YYYY — Reckon Accounts in Australia does — choose that from the date format selector and convert again.
"No transactions found in OFX file"
The download almost certainly covered a date range with no activity — re-download with a wider range and check the file opens as text. Brokerage statements are read too, so an investment OFX is not the cause.
Everything imported twice
QIF carries no FITID, so nothing in the file tells your software it has seen these transactions before — that safety net exists in OFX and QFX but not here. Delete the duplicate range and re-import only the dates you are missing.
Quicken for Mac will not import into an existing account
Modern Quicken for Mac accepts QIF only while creating an account, not into one that already exists. Create the account from the QIF, or use our OFX to QFX route instead if your Quicken version supports it.
Microsoft Money stops partway through a long file
Money Plus Sunset caps an import at roughly 500 transactions. Split a long statement into shorter date ranges and import them one at a time.

Will my old Quicken actually accept the QIF file?
It depends on the version, and most converters never mention it. Quicken 2004 and earlier import QIF into any account. Quicken 2005 blocked checking, savings, 401(k) and brokerage; 2006 blocked credit cards too. Quicken Classic 2018+ reversed all of it. The version table above shows where yours falls.
Quicken 2005–2017 will not let me pick my checking account. Is there a way in?
Yes. Add four lines to the top of the QIF in any text editor — !Account, N followed by the exact account name as it appears in Quicken, T followed by Bank or CCard, then a lone caret. Quicken honours that header and ignores the dropdown. Failing that, import into a temporary cash or asset account, which was never blocked, and move the transactions across.
What gets lost converting OFX to QIF?
Four things QIF has no field for: FITIDs (so there is no duplicate detection — avoid importing the same date range twice), the closing balance, the currency code, and the bank and account numbers. Dates, amounts, payees, memos and cheque numbers all carry over.
Is this OFX to QIF converter really free?

Is there a free OFX to QIF converter to download, or an offline version?
There is no free download here, and that is deliberate. You can use this OFX to QIF converter online, in the browser, so there is nothing to download, install or license, and it behaves the same on Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS. Every offline OFX to QIF converter we found is paid desktop software — if your files genuinely cannot leave the machine, that is the honest answer.
I have a QFX file, not an OFX. Can I still use this?
Yes — a QFX to QIF conversion works the same way, with a rename. QFX is an OFX with an Intuit bank ID this converter ignores, so renaming .qfx to .ofx produces a byte-identical QIF — we tested that directly rather than assuming it. Worth trying on your own software first, too: Microsoft Money reads QFX as-is.
My bank stopped offering QFX and OFX downloads. What now?
Bank of America ended both on 30 September 2025 and offers CSV only; Chase dropped Direct Connect in 2022. Convert whatever OFX you still have here, and once your bank is CSV-only use our CSV to QIF converter instead — the QIF that comes out is the same.
Which date order does the QIF use?
Your choice, defaulting to MM/DD/YYYY with a four-digit year. An OFX writes dates as 20260703, which is unambiguous and so cannot tell us which order you need — hence the date format selector above the download. Pick DD/MM/YYYY for Reckon Accounts in Australia, which rejects the US order.
What about an investment OFX from a broker?
Supported. Trades in INVTRANLIST become a QIF investment register — !Type:Invst with the action, security, quantity, price and commission on each entry. Securities are named by CUSIP in the file, so the real name is looked up and written as "Apple Inc" rather than 037833100. Swept cash comes across too.
Does it handle credit card OFX files?
Yes. A card statement is written with the !Type:CCard header so Quicken files it in a card register rather than a checking one. Nothing to select — it is read from your file.
I use Microsoft Money Plus Sunset. Do I even need to convert?
Probably not, and we would rather say so. Money imports OFX directly, so try your .ofx as-is and convert only if it is refused. Money also caps an import at roughly 500 transactions, whichever format you use.
Is my data secure?
Encrypted in transit via TLS and processed in memory. The conversion takes about a second and nothing is kept afterwards.
